Pricing

My pricing is based on what ive determined is my amount of time a specific type of drawing cost me, my goal is between $20-$25/hour right now, and my prices may go up as I both get a better understanding on how much time a piece takes, as well as increase along with my skill and dedication (I get a raise for good and dedicated performance, just like most jobs!)

Background Styles

– Simple Prop BG (+$10-$20 or more): This background is a simple prop, either something important to the character or something for the setting to help balance of off-set the picture. This prop could be an extra piece of fairly simple equipment, or it could be something like a road sign with some character, a grave stone, etc… The more complex a background, is the more expensive it is.

– Simple BG (+$30-$50 or more): This background is a more complex prop or a simple background with a few features, since as a handful of trees, buildings, a simple cemetery, etc… The more complex a background, is the more expensive it is.

– Complicated BG (+$30-$50 or more): Highly detailed props, buildings, background characters, scenery and environments. The more complex a background, is the more expensive it is.

Extras

All prices for Extras are generalizations and estimations to give you an idea on possible cost, but all

– Complicated/Detailed Weapon (+$10 or more): Do you have a weapon with intricate scrollwork, custom runes, moving and hovering parts, tiny gears, or other intricate details that go beyond the scope of a usual functional weapon? You may need to pay a lil extra for the time it takes to get those exacting details!

– Complicated Armor/Clothing (+$15 or more): multiple layers, a dozen buckles and belts, complicated armor detail, runes, etching or scrollwork all require additional time and effort to complete, which translates to additional costs! The cost here is assumed to be a fullbody piece where the detail is widespread, i single intricate pauldron on a bust could end up being less than the proposed $15 minimum.

– Complicated Features (+$10 or more): Curling demon horns, draconic snouts and other non standard features for a humanoid can be time consuming to get just right (for me anyway) and may require additional effort in pulling up references, all of which translates to an additional charge.

– Extra Characters (priced as commissioning that character): Extra characters take the same amount of time as they would as a solo commission, which means they are priced accordingly.

Commercial Rights

If you would like to use the art for commercial purposes (making money), feel free to contact me for specifics, the price will change based on a lot of considerations relating to how it will be used and in how many ways will you be looking to make money off of it.

The most important one though, is how much money you predict you will make. Art can be a huge barrier to indie games, despite being an incredibly important resource. A lot of indie games will take years (if ever) to break even on “correctly priced” commercially licensed art, and that isn’t what I want. To be clear, my intent in having an extra charge licensing my work for commercial use, is so that if someone takes my art and ends up making stacks and stacks from it, I at least got a lil bit more out of the deal. If you doubt you’ll break even or make enough to warrant it, im usually happy to waive the commercial licensing fee, and bake in a deal on the contract that if you make $xx.xx amount, it will trigger an additional payout.

I’m also usually happy to accept profit splitting or royalty sharing.

Process

Unless there is a specific deadline we’ve agreed too, commissions can sometime take as long as 3 weeks, especially if I have other work. They wont always and will sometimes be much faster, but plan for 3 weeks, if we haven’t discussed anything else. The process for commissions will usually go as follows:

– Step One: Communication and Quote: While communication is an ongoing process, it is likely heaviest in the beginning when we are confirming details and discussing what exactly you want out of the commission and what I am capable of providing. This is also when we are likely to identify any “extras” in the work. A quote will be provided, a quote is rarely negotiable but am willing to discuss doing particularly expensive commissions on a payment based schedule.

-Step Two: Payment and Sketch: following agreement on details, I will send an invoice through paypal, I wont begin work until payment is received up front. The first portion of this process will be exploratory and investigative. This is when I am looking up references and resources that may be needed and trying to get a good base sketch. When I’m ready to continue past this phase, I will provide one or more sketches for your approval and consideration. This is also when you can let me know if there are any details either of us forgot or you want tweaked or changed.

– Step Three: Lineart: At this point I will begin working on the final linework, sometimes referred to as “inking” getting crisp, clear and clean lines in various lineweights. If this is done in a single sitting you may get an update when it is finished, if it is taking longer than a single session, you will likely get updates as I finish for the day. This is also one of the last times that it is easy for you to request a linework change without incurring additional charges (if i have to completely redesign something and that takes an hour+, and the change is something that I couldn’t have known about, that will incur additional charges.)

– Step Four: Flat Colors: This is where I will drop flat colors into the lineart, each color will exist on its own layer, so changes to colors is fairly easy. If Flat Colors are completed in one sitting, you will be sent a completed flat color image to consider and provide feedback. Feel free to suggest color changes, even providing hexcodes or swatches if necessary! If Flat colors are taking multiple sessions to complete, you will receive updates at the end of each of those sessions. The further into the commission we get the harder it will be to change details of the lineart overall composition without incurring additional charges but the sooner you catch them the better for everyone!

-Step Five: Shading/Rendering: Here we are at the end game, this is where shading, lightning and any additional necessary effects like glows will come into place. You’ll be sent a final file for one more perusal and opportunity for some tweaks you may wish to request.

– Step 6: Sending off the files! Now that that is done and completed I will send you the files. Files are sent in 600 dpi and 72 dpi batches, It is requested that you do not post that 600 dpi images online and keep those for personal use. Posting hi-resolution images like that online allows people to more easily steal and use them for their own purposes. Unless you have additional requests, files will be sent are:

        • A hi-res 600dpi image with background (where applicable)
        • A hi-res 600dpi image with transparent/no background
        • A low-res 72dpi watermarked image with background (where applicable)
        • A low-res 72dpi watermarked image with transparent/no background
